As its name denotes, 'Once Upon a Time' is based on a fairy tale premise. It made its debut on ABC in 2011 and revolves around a fantasy created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.
The series begins with all the right ingredients. There is a couple (Snow White and her Prince Charming) getting married, cursed by the Evil Queen. They do have a daughter called Emma Snow whose story begins on her 28th birthday. Emma Snow is played by Jennifer Morrison who is a bounty hunter and bail bond agent. The series begins with Swan being reunited with her son whom she had given up for adoption. She drives him back to Storybrooke, Maine. Enroute the son tells her about his very real fairy tale book and the fact that only she can break the curse cast by the Evil Queen.
She reached her destination, but is unable to leave and moves in with the Mayor of the town and the adoptive mother for her son. From here on, the struggles between Swan and the Evil Queen played by Lana Parrilla who is the Mayor and the Evil Queen, keep going through many twists and turns.
The premise for 'Once Upon a Time' is interesting indeed but perhaps that’s all it will be – an entertaining fairy tale with a twist. Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin also put in an appearance in this series. Ginnifer Goodwin plays Snow Whitewho is now a schoolteacher in the modern world. Robert Carlyle plays Rumpelstiltskin or Mr.Gold as he is known in Storybrooke
'Once Upon a Time' is replete with a lot of twists and turns and has the characters meandering through murders, the schoolteacher, Mary Margaret Blanchard being framed for murder and an extra marital affair thrown in too. In fact, Mary Margaret is framed for killing Kathryn, whose husband is the one she is having the affair with. In a very dramatic twist in the tale, Kathryn’s heart is found in Mary’s jewelry box.
'Once Upon a Time' offers some great entertainment for its fairy tale world in a very modern setting but it could do with a bit more reality. There is a sense of disconnect between the characters in Storybrooke and their age – time seems to have stood still for 3 decades here and most of the story is in flashback mode anyway. The Evil Queen has transported all these people from the fairytale world into the real world.
