Mark Schwahn created 'One Tree Hill' which aired on the WB television Network in 2003. The series follows the lives of a handful of teenagers in Tree Hill, a fictional town in North Carolina.

At the center of 'One Tree Hill' are the 2 half brothers Nathan and Lucas Scott. However, they are far from affectionate for their father Dan Scott abandoned Lucas and Karen, his mother. Dan lives with his wife Deb and their son Nathan who enjoy a life of great privilege. Lucas and Nathan are in ferocious competition with each other for getting to the basketball team in school and it does not help that Dan used to be a star athlete.

Lucas makes it to the team which does not go down well with Dan and Nathan. The brothers also collide over their common love interest, Peyton Sawyer, played by Hilarie Burton. Lucas and Nathan are played by Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty respectively.

The brothers do come together over time. The series has a lot of dramatic elements to it and makes for interesting viewing among the teen crowd. Nathan marries Haley, who is Lucas’s best friend. Lucas is the romantic interest for two girls – Peyton Sawyer and Brooke Davis, played by Sophia Bush.

There is also the fact that Dan, played by Paul Johansson, is capable of showing plenty of evil. He kills his own brother, Keith, played by Craig Sheffer, who was instrumental in helping Karen raise Lucas. After Keith is killed by Dan, Karen has his daughter – Lily Roe Scott. Keith makes a comeback as a spirit that steers Lucas and Nathan through life.

Dan Scott is the character that most people would love to hate since he has caused so many people so much sorrow, including his wife Deb, (played by Barbara Alyn Woods) and son. But in a surprisingly heroic move, he saves Nathan from a bullet, taking it himself instead.

The lives of both the Scott brothers are interesting in their contrasts. Nathan lacks nothing and yet is constantly pushed by his father to do better in basketball. Lucas is driven by a lot of hatred to do better in life and it is his mother who keeps him grounded even when he comes to know about his heart condition. Karen is a café owner who works double hard to ensure a good life for both of them. Deb on the other hand, pretty much ignores her son Nathan. She is a rather neurotic alcoholic character. The arrogance of Nathan is study in contrast to the quiet determination of Lucas.
